The day of the visit it rained like Heavens wanted to drown someone and didn't care about collateral damage.
The evening newspaper lied on a table, untouched but for the front page nearly ripped out by the sheer force of opening the pages, as if not a human hand but a claw tried moving it.
The lady of the house was, indeed, in a very bad mood, though it wasn't visible to anyone not knowing her well. Sitting a bit to straightened and still, staring at nothing in particular, eyes a bit more wide than they should be. But she did talk. When she didn't respond, the maids knew it was better not to push their luck further.
,,Mrs. Beaumont, you have a-"
,,Tell him I am not accepting any visitors today," sounded sharply.
,,But- it's-"
,,They know better than to bother me in this house."
The girl knew it was pointless to argue, and not entirely safe either. It wasn't like anything could happen to them... but the lady was scary when angry. And caused nightmares if she got so far as to shriek on them. No exaggerating.
,,Stupid reckless childlish behaviour," Helen muttered to herself through clenched teeth, getting up and snatching the newspaper to take it with her to a room downstairs that used to be part of the cellars, stomping all the way.
,,Why arent'cha a ray of sunshine today."
She nearly leaped up to the ceiling. Startled surprise turned into fury a second later, seeing her (uncalled) visitor.
The nerve! Whole of London talking of him and there he sits, water dripping off everywhere, feet up on a chair, not even a bit bothered!
A thousand curses, threats, questions and a hundred ways to give a slap floated to the surface, ending up in only a helpless gesture and a ,,What."
,,You're not greeting a old friend very nicely," he snorted from under a hat.
,,Friend?" she spat out, pacing the room. ,,You don't even know, what does that word MEAN!" It spilled out uncontrollably, without a second thought. Only after did she stop, slightly horrified at it.
He fell deadly quiet, only staring on her. More drops dripped to the ground.
,,What does showing up and to see if you're alive and well prove?" came a relatively tame question.
,,You- HE isn't!" nearly with a shriek, she threw the newspaper into his lap. With a raised eyebrow he straightened it, looking it over briefly. He stiffened right after.
,,It's in the-?"
,,Of course! So it WAS really you! WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?!"
,,Stop screaming on me!" he snapped, not looking up from the front page for more than a split second. ,,Last time I checked, you weren't my mother!"
,,You- you were seen! You were seen at a murder of a noble!"
He fell silent.
,,Yes, it does seem so." Out went a nervous laugh that resembled a bark.
,,That's no laughing matter! How- WHY did you do it?!" she barely kept voice low.
,,Why or how? I would love to narrate details of the 'how', but I don't have all day," Hyde grinned widely at that. Helen pushed the temptation aside.
,,WHY."
,,Why? I'll tell you why." He threw the newspaper down springing to his feet and in two strides stepping in front of her, now more serious, but still in a apparently good mood. ,,One word; hypocrisy."
,,What?" she got out incredulously, didn't know if to be concerned or still mad.
,,Oh, dearie, if only you saw, how much he tried to pretend not to be scared. Not to be disgusted by seeing my face." He placed a palm on her cheek lightly. ,,How he tried to act all proper, not shuddering on seeing a abomination."
She flinched slightly, crossing arms.
,,Do you know those looks? 'I don't like it, I want to stay away, but I gotta pretend I do'. I get them from nearly everyone. Do you?"
,,Of course I do," she muttered, feeling the anger subsiding. ,,from nearly everyone."
,,Don't you sometimes want to just smash their face of the wall?"
,,Dear gods, all the time," she sighed, gritting teeth. Every single fearful glance reminded her of where she was and where was she supposed to be. That they tolerated her only because of a clear account. No matter how hard trying, one wouldn't fit among those clear human faces that pretended they were all superior and pure and above all else-
Suddenly, his rampage made a lot more sense.
,,Well," he announced contently. ,,That's just what I did. A bit more on top. Felt great. I don't regret one drop of blood out." She laughed at that, very amused on the concept of Hyde ever regretting.
,,Did you ever?" she brushed his cheek playfully in return. He didn't even stop to think.
,,No. That's how it should be too, in my opinion," he added philosophically, nodding. ,,Do you?"
,,Currently? I regret yelling at you."
,,Better let it all out, not killing you for that."
,,Err, are you sure?"
He smirked. ,,No, hun, not you. But chatting, that's not what I came for."
,,And what did you want?"
,,Just came to announce you won't see me for awhile. Need to hide until that passes," he nodded in the general direction of outside.
,,Where?" Helen sprang to attention.
,,Sorry, but I won't tell you. That haven's only safe 'till nobody knows where it is." She let out a heavy sigh.
,,Well, that is unfortunate. But it won't be for long, right?"
He scratched the back of his neck, head hung low.
,,But you WILL be back."
,,'Course I will be back. When wasn't I? And you'll be the first to know."
,,Promise?" For a while both stared on each other, blank faces on.
,,Sure. Promise."
,,Alright." She smiled. ,,That's all I needed to know."
,,Is it? Then I'll take my leave." He swept down hat in the usual gesture, then with apparently little effort was out the cellar window.
She watched disappearing the back of one of the only persons who never needed to pretend not to be afraid seeing her.

Oooh, more Helen and Hyde interaction! I'm seriously tempted to include him in TLAB, along with several other characters...
